Emailing "Plot" Files for Printing

QUESTION BY SPLASH MEMBER:
I called my local printing company and they said i can e-mail them my drawings and they can print it out. They said somthing about a plot file but i am not sure what he was talking about or what i need to do so he can open and print the files. Does anyone know what i need to do.
ANSWER:
You need the same driver installed for the printer that the printer company uses. Call and ask them what printer they use and then get the driver for that specific printer. Sometimes the printer will have that driver available for you. Install this printer. Then, from SP, select that printer to print to, verify the paper sizes, orientation, etc, select PRINT TO FILE, and then name the file and the location where you want this file to be sent to on your hard drive. SP will then print using this printer, and put the file into the folder you named. Once you have all of these printed to file, you can then email to the printer. If using a dialup, it pays to compress the files with a zip utility like Winzip. If DSL, just send the files over as printed.
Be sure to use specific names on each file so you know which is which.
I use Win2K OS and have to add the extension .prn (or .plt) manually to the end of each file that I print. Some OS, such as Win 98, will do that for you.
